About Your Teacher:
Mr. Conklin
My name is Denny Conklin and prior to starting at Arlington, I taught for 5 years at Framingham High School then worked as a program associate, leading professional development for teachers on the Holocaust and Civil Rights Movement at Facing History and Ourselves. This is my 3rd year in Arlington and I’m excited to get started. My Bachelor’s degree is from Boston College in Secondary Education/History and my Master’s degree is also from Boston College in Curriculum and Instruction. My research concentration throughout college was in United States foreign policy and teenage morality development. I enjoy running, kayaking, reading, and watching TV. I have six month old son, Roman, 2 dogs, Ollie a Puggle and Truman, a French Bulldog. Every summer I volunteer up at Camp Sunshine, in Casco Maine, a camp for kids with life-threatening illnesses and their families. I'm looking forward to getting to know my students and their families this year! |
My Philosophy of Teaching:
It is my hope that students this year, will experience history in a new way and that both you and I can work as partners to ensure the success of each student. I am committed to creating a “history experience” for students. I want them to be actively engaged in history and have them consider choices people in the past made so that we can more clearly understand choices we make today. In order to do this, I use hands-on activities, simulations, role-playing, and connect history with current events. I also hope to support my students in more than just their understanding of history—this includes helping students with other subjects, looking for colleges, or coming to their sports games, plays, or other events. I try to design my teaching so that I give each student the best opportunity to show me that they can think critically in history. I believe that each student in my class, with work on my part and theirs, can achieve a high level of success this year.
